Visual roadmap for CPU vs GPU: what each processor actually does
Article roadmap covering The architectural difference, Integrated and discrete graphics, Choose by measured workload.
Quick answer

A CPU is a flexible general-purpose processor optimized for varied instructions and low-latency control. A GPU contains many smaller processing units designed to handle large amounts of similar work in parallel. Most useful computers need both; the workload determines which deserves more budget.

The architectural difference

The CPU coordinates operating-system work, application logic and many different instruction patterns. Its relatively powerful cores and cache hierarchy are suited to tasks where response time and sequential decisions matter.

The GPU applies many smaller cores to graphics and other parallel workloads. That does not make every application faster: software must be designed to use the GPU, and data movement, memory capacity and driver support can still limit results.

Buying questionDoes the application need stronger per-core or multi-core CPU performance?Does the application or game use GPU acceleration, and how much graphics memory is required?

Integrated and discrete graphics

Integrated graphics shares the processor package or platform and typically uses system memory. It can suit display, office, media and lighter graphics work. A discrete graphics card has its own processor and usually dedicated memory, cooling and power requirements.

A discrete card also adds physical size, power connectors, heat and driver considerations. Confirm the case, power supply, motherboard slot, display connectors and software requirements before purchase.

Choose by measured workload

  • Office, browsing and accounting: responsiveness, memory and storage may matter more than a large discrete GPU.
  • Gaming: review the target games, resolution, quality and frame-rate goal; CPU and GPU balance both matter.
  • Video, 3D, AI or engineering: check the exact application's acceleration support, memory needs and certified-driver guidance.
  • Virtual machines and software builds: core count, memory capacity and storage throughput may dominate.
  • Always include cooling, power, noise and upgrade space in the decision.
